In a recent survey, more than 65% of marketers said that effective email marketing was central to their business. Billions and billions of emails are sent every day, so it is important to master the skill of getting your email seen and opened in busy inboxes. Regular and appropriate communication is crucial for effective email marketing. If you get somebody to sign up to your list and you ignore them for too much time, they’ll forget about who you are. The next time you send them an email, they won’t remember that they gave you permission to email them in the first place, and they’ll mark you as spam. If you get too many emails labelled this way, you’ll be marked as a spammer and your email account can get closed down.

For the purposes of this article, we will assume that you’ve got your authoresponder software all set up and your opt-in forms live on your website and online sales pages. Once this is done it’s where your email marketing best practices start so that you don’t get deleted or reported as spam when your email lands in the inbox.

1. Send an email to say welcome.

Effective email marketing starts with sending a warm welcome email when somebody opts into your list. You want to thank the person for signing up. If you promised a free download, make sure they don’t have to jump through hoops to get it and give them the download link right in the first email.

2. Send relevant follow ups.

A scheduled set of email follow ups are effective because it your target audience will look out for the next email. For instance, if you promise to show them how to repair their relationship in 7 short steps, send them one step per email over 7 days. Don’t send all 7 steps in one go. This is where you can use your authoresponder to its full potential and pre-program your email series.

3. Do not trick your readers to open the email.

One of the important factors for email marketing best practices is ensuring that your message meets the promise of the subject line. Your email must have an engaging subject line to get it opened, but don’t trick people into opening your message by promising something that you won’t be able to deliver. There can be a fine line between being smart and being deceitful. Make sure you don’t cross it.

4. Allow people to unsubscribe.

Let someone unsubscribe from your list if they want to. Don’t make it difficult as they may label you as spam. You won’t have any success with your email marketing if you become over-anxious if someone unsubscribes from your list. If a recipient has no interest in receiving or reading your emails, it’s not likely that they will ever become a customer in any case.

5. Create a relationship.

Email messages that promote a response are great because they drive traffic back to your blog and get people to comment on what you just said. Inquisitive email follow ups are those where you ask your reader to give an opinion and people love to be asked for their opinion. You could also survey your audience about an upcoming product or service you have.

6. Constantly provide value.

Proving value is what email marketing best practices are all about. Mix in some special perk emails with your regular follow up emails. This could be a free report on a related topic or access to a private webinar. These are methods where you can say thank you to your readers for subscribing and letting you communicate with them on a regular basis. Don’t just continuously blast out out sales messages.

7. Know your audience.

It should go without having to say that email marketing best practices also mean knowing your audience. If you send emails to people who do not want them or did not ask for them, that is spamming. Spread your follow up emails out in a way that your audience will best respond to. Some people like daily emails. Some might respond to once every three or four days, or every other week. You’ll have to evaluate your audience and see what works best for you and them.

Frankly for financial reasons it is a lot more ideal if you can develop a part-time business when you still have an income to support yourself. However, if you are not prepared when you lose your job, you can still work it out if you are really focused, disciplined and determined to land on your feet.

You have to be realistic, no matter how shocking it is to lose your job unexpectedly.

Take a few days to digest the information and get your bearings. If you are being laid off in a workforce reduction the theory is to let you know on a Friday. This is, so it doesn’t disrupt your job performance during the week and so that you will have a few non-business days to get used to the idea that you have nowhere to go on Monday.

Typically they have known about this for some time but do not let you know because they want to lessen the chances of sabotage or other problems. This let’s you know that where your employer is concerned, you are not a person, just a position. They have their bottom line, and it is nothing personal, so don’t feel bad if you can help it. It may seem brutal and it is, but that is reality.

However, the better companies would at least give you severance pay based on your length of employment with them and pay your for any unused vacation time that you have. The fact that you are being let go without cause in most states automatically entitles you to unemployment insurance. So all that together with anything you have saved is what you have to work with.

Start right here with creating a budget and a plan for how you will survive and pay your bills until you find another income. You might be very surprised if you take stock in how much you have been spending just to go to and from work. You can factor that in to money you now have available that you didn’t have before. This refers primarily to transportation – gas expense or mass transit costs, bridge tolls and parking; and it also can include child care, grooming and wardrobe costs, lunches out, etc. It really adds up when you start to itemize it.

If you have little or no employment severance benefits and no savings, then your first priority is to find a job at least part-time or temporary.

If you are looking at the job boards online you will invariably start seeing ‘business opportunities’ and ‘earning money from home’ etc. Be careful here and do not ever feel that you are desperate and need to take unnecessary risks or compromise your identity. However, you can start to do a little research – but again, focus on getting an income coming in the fastest way you can – and that is usually another job. One very good way to ‘kill two birds with one stone’ is to work for a temporary agency.

Starting a business takes time – there is a learning curve, and you need time to implement what you learn. Then of course contrary to what it may seem you are reading, it does take time to produce results. So you are a ways away from an income. That is why you first need to ensure your survival so that you can then focus on doing everything you can to build your business.

Besides your financial budget, you should also schedule your time each day, because you need to see your actions to find an income as the job that you have now.

Don’t get lost on the Internet – focus only on seeing what jobs are available, get the contact information and make an appointment for an interview if possible. Of course you will need to create a decent resume for this purpose going in. Just make a note about business opportunties for starting a home business and refer back to them later.

So say out of an 8 hour day you spend 2 hours on the Internet and because you have an interview, with travel time, etc., you want to schedule 3 hours to get ready and go. That leaves 3 hours in your workday and you can spend this time researching starting your own business. Once you determine what you want to do then you can spend the time implementing that (… and this would be another plan you need to create).

You will be so productive and busy that you will not have a minute to regret any doors that have closed and can really see your new life as an exciting adventure that is so much more stimulating than the ‘same-old-same-old’ rut you were in. If you focus you will not only survive nicely, but you will find that your former employer really did you a favor by letting you go!

While it’s so much more relaxed and casual to work from your home office, you still need to keep in mind that it is for the purpose of business that you are there. As part of focusing your mind on the work you need to do to develop and maintain a business, what you see in front of you is directly related.

Why add continually navigating chaos to your work-related tasks every time you do something? It wastes time and energy, not to mention causes you to lose focus on what you need to be doing. Make staying organized part of your work day and put things away! Get folders for things and even if all you have is a box or plastic crate, put your folders or important papers in there. ‘Out of sight out of mind’ has special relevance here. If your workspace is organized you will think and see things more clearly. Remove anything that is not related to business out of your office space entirely if you can.

There is more than one reason for creating a focused environment in your home office. For tax purposes, particularly if it is the case that you only make part of your income from home, when you are claiming home business deductions (which you should) then you have to have a clear delineation to separate ‘home’ from ‘business.’ In fact, an actual door on your office is required. (For those lucky enough to earn their entire income from home, you don’t need the door but you still need to have an area dedicated only to business.

In any case you can figure the square feet in your living space and determine how much is used exclusively for business. Then you can deduct expenses based on that percentage for rent, utilities, insurance, etc., in addition to directly related business expenses such as office supplies, equipment, etc.

Just be sure you have receipts for every penny you claim. Another element to organize and to keep a folder marked ‘Taxes’ where you put receipts and invoices all year long, so you are not scrambling at the last minute, and maybe even missing something that would have been a deduction to your self-employment income taxes.

Be sure that part of your organization and focus involves committing your time (scheduling) – where you will sit and work and do nothing else. Turn on your voice mail and be sure that your family and friends know and respect your hours of business just as they would have to if you were going off to a job. If you have little kids then obviously this time allocated to your business should be when they are at school or sleeping if possible.

You really won’t get as much done, or retain as much information if you are constantly being interrupted by the doorbell, phone, kids, dog, etc. Of course the kids (and dogs) are some of the main good reasons you have for starting a home business; and of course you can’t always have 100% control over them, but with a little planning and mutual respect you can have more time for them and still have a successful business.

Oh – and don’t forget to rest – when you shut down (and put everything away) at the end of your work time, shut the door – even if the door is only in your mind. You have to have a time where you are OFF work – to relax and enjoy the other facets of your life. Resist the temptation to log back on your computer every time you get a bright idea. Just write it down and take care of it next time you go back to work.

If you are to be successful in network marketing it is important that you understand who your market is. Some people are looking for opportunity seekers. Other people are product oriented and look for people who need their product. The more specific and targeted you are the more successful you will be. I personally am looking for fellow Christians that have a passion to be effective witnesses for Christ. You must know and understand your niche market.

I can promise you that if you take a shotgun approach to network marketing you will have limited success at best. When you narrow your focus down to people who think like you do and have similar values you’ll enjoy a much greater level of success. For example, in my program I follow the example of the early Christian church. I look for people with similar values in lifestyle and as a result it is much easier for me to relate to their problems. In secular network marketing they often rely on hype and emotion to recruit new Associates. By contrast I want my customers and potential associates to experience the benefits of the products that I promote. I want them to know how to use the product effectively to get positive results. When you realize that people love to buy the hate to be sold you realize that you must develop a desire or a need in the minds is a potential buyer. More than 95% of all the people involved in network marketing are not trained in marketing or sales.

Wellness products lend themselves well to this niche market. Why would anyone want to listen to you share how much Christ has done for you if you are sickly and in poor health. When I can help people to realize that they are partnering with the creator God in improving the lifestyle of their loved ones that gets their attention. In a very real sense the apostle Paul was a self-supporting missionary. By trade he was a tent maker. In his time tent making was in very high demand and provided him an opportunity to present his true mission of witnessing for Christ. Today one of the leading concerns on people’s minds is their health. If I can help people understand that over 80% of all degenerative disease is lifestyle related I can then make a difference in their life for good.

I have never found a better way to be a self-supporting missionary than through network marketing. Your base is usually very loyal and has a sense of commitment to your mission. As they achieve success in a better quality of life through your program they desire to share with others. At that point they become associates and join your team. Everybody has different talents and when used effectively in the team everyone wins. Some are great at recruiting, some are greater presenting, and some are great at making friends. I may not make a six-figure income, but I have made some awesome friends. It provides for a comfortable living doing the things I love to do the most. Can you say that about your job?

People want quick information in a capsule form. They don’t want you to rant about nonsense which makes hardly any sense to them or has little benefit to their daily life. You just get about 30 seconds to put your point across. If you are not specific, you have lost their attention.

As it is rightly said: “Knowledge is Power” and everyone wants to be one up on their neighbor. Color plans of the newsletter should represent your branding and should be sober and subtle. Keeping it consistent throughout is also a good idea.

A newsletter which focuses less on utility and more on the product or service, is as good as a banner advertisement which claims you have won a Jackpot of Billions of Dollars. It is ignored and condemned. If you try to be too pushy and overtly upsell your products, you may start repelling customers. Trying to teach ABCD is not going to go down very well with the customers either. It hurts their ego that you are trying to teach them something they already know. They will ignore it and delete your newsletter. The skill of drafting a newsletter lies in gauging the target audience’s average intellect and keeping the article in tune with it. You want to be more of a big brother rather than a strict father in the newsletter.

Bombarding the readers with links and banner ads will definitely ensure that they don’t open the newsletters. The readers are not interested in you blowing your own trumpet and forcing them to visit your site. A newsletter must remain as professional as your service. Infact, many Spam Filters will block out mails which have a high number of hyperlinks or suspicious words in them. You should test your newsletters for spammy content and delivery failure before you send out your campaign. Many online tools are available for this.

Whether your newsletter is impressive or not, depends on how much effort you put into it. It is a marketing tool to gain repeat orders and have “Brand Recall” in the customers mind. What is ‘residual’ income?

It is income where you make a sale one time and it generates income on a regular basis going forward. Residual income can even be earned on multiple levels. For example, if you refer someone to an affiliate program, you make a commission for a percentage of the initial sale. In the future when your customer pays their membership fees for the program each month, you earn a percentage of that as a commission.

With ‘multi-level-marketing’ you may also receive a percentage of the commissions when your customer makes sales of their own. So the idea is that you have income that continues to generate as a result of that initial sale for as long as your customer remains active in the program. This would also be true if you were directly selling a service, for as long as your customer continues to use the service. Usually if you are selling products directly, these are considered ‘one-time-only’ commissions, as you earn money only one time when the purchase is made.

Nothing wrong with this, but it does take much more work to build and sustain your momentum to keep those one-time sales coming in on a regular basis. It is a good idea to have a combination of sales types and the money all adds up to represent a substantial income. However, it does seem like a brighter idea to have residual income – just in the way it is more efficient to plant ‘perennials’ that bloom every season after they are planted once, than it is to have ‘annuals’ that you must replant every year.

It’s fun that the plant analogy really does work so well when discussing residual income too – because for example when you have a perennial plant it will not only bloom each year in the same place, but the wind will carry the seeds and the plant may pop up in many different places.

With residual income it is the same in that you have contacted the initial customer who then contacts others, who contact others and before you know it you have built an ‘organization’ just from that one initial action that you took by ‘planting the seed.’ Internet marketing and in fact marketing in any industry is about generating lots of volume with your efforts. This is because the majority of people will not be interested and will not respond.

It is a bit like the proverbial ‘needle in a haystack’ in that you must weed through all the people who won’t be interested to find the few that will. Actually there are many that will respond over time – but just as a percentage of the human population on earth, only a few (million) are interested in starting a home business or working from home.

Remember as well that it is believed that people do not usually respond to an ad the first time they see it. It is approximately the 5th or 6th time. This is another reason to always keep the volume of your advertising turned up to the max. This week someone may not be interested – but things are always changing and maybe next week they will change their mind and respond to your ad!

Picking a Domain Name.

When you find an available domain name, Google it before buying it. You want to check that nobody else is using a similar name for something unethical, spammy or unpleasant. While this does take a little extra time, you don’t want your business to get mixed up with a similar website that is not legitimate.

Always try to get a .com domain name, as a .com is the most widely recognized business domain extension. If you have the available funds, add the .net, .biz, .co.uk, .us and other domain extensions too, to avoid the risk of someone hijacking those other domains and capturing your spill over traffic. It’s also worth registering a domain with your personal name that contains the term ‘Who is.’

When starting an online business it can be tempting to choose a domain name from one of the websites that provide ‘free’ domain names. It is always better to actually purchase one because a free domain is usually just a subdomain. This means that the name of the website that is giving you a free domain will appear before your online business name. This makes the website address very long and visitors can easily mistype it and could go the entirely the wrong place.

You will often hear in network marketing training the importance of making a list. There is no question that your list is crucial to your success. The challenge is how you use the list. The farmer in contrast to the hunter works a small piece of land. He first prepares the land, then he plants the seed, then he cultivates his crop, and then he reaps a harvest. For a farmer to be successful he realizes that he must make an investment in his harvest. When it comes to network marketing we must make an investment in our customers. If I’m going to make an investment in someone I would like to be someone that I care about. I believe your list should include the people who mean the most to you. If you represent a product that you sincerely believe offers real benefits it only makes sense that you should promote them to the people you care about most. A reality is that there are no magic bullets. I deal in a line of exceptionally good nutritional products. I realize that for a potential customer to use my products he must develop a highly duplicatable success rate for my product. This means that I do not simply sell my product to someone, but rather I must educate them on how to use it effectively. In other words, I must educate my customer. In network marketing you often hear the phrase “the gold is in the follow-up” which simply means you need to make sure the product is fulfilling your customers desires.

The farmer type marketer recognizes that his product are his seeds. The sales information can be equated to fertilizer. If you have lousy seeds it really does not make any difference how good the fertilizers is. If you provide people with samples, seeds, and make sure that they use the product in a way to optimize its success you will reap a good harvest. When a customer harvests success with your product they will want to let other people know. Once your customer has experienced success with your product and you teach them how to duplicate your planting and cultivating procedures they also will begin to reap a bountiful harvest.

So when we think of duplication we must first think of getting duplicatable results with the product through education and training we are then able to duplicate people who are well able to produce a predictable harvest. The question for you to answer is would you rather roam a large area trying to find a target or would you rather work a small piece of land was predictable results.

Any good gardener knows that there is a wide variety of seeds. It is often very valuable to try different seed companies until you find one that you like.
